What is “GPI”? What is its meaning?
Probably on more than one occasion you have seen people write “GPI” in text messages or in comments on social networks. It is a term that even the RAE has already defined, but still it has no linguistic validity in Spanish. This means that it is part of the most popular expressions on social networks, but it does not belong to the language.
The RAE, from its system for consulting doubts on Twitter, indicated that the meaning of “GPI” is “thank you for inviting”. However, it can be used in a variety of contexts and is often used sarcastically.
“It is an abbreviation typical of informal electronic communications (…) The abbreviations coined for use in chats and short messages are restricted to use in this area and should not be transferred to the general language, so they are not subject to regulation or systematization by the language ”, mentioned the RAE.
How and when to use the “GPI”?
Generally, users do not use the “GPI” or “thank you for inviting” to refer cordially to someone. Rather, it is used in a completely opposite sense; in a sarcastic way and implying that you were not invited and you noticed.
So when you upload a photo with your friends or enjoying a delicious dinner and someone says “GPI”, they are sarcastically implying that they were not invited by you and, probably, you pushed them aside. It is a wake-up call but in a fun and uncomplaining way.
On many occasions, the “GPI” is a game mode between Internet users, but there are still many who do not know its meaning.
