The story behind September
On September 21 the International Day of Peace after the United Nations General Assembly established it that way since 1982. And although the Assembly never officially explained the reason why it chose exactly the 21st of this month to celebrate the strengthening of the ideals of peace, many people relate it to the feeling and enthusiasm it transmits September, the classic song from Earth & Wind and Fire.

“Do you remember, 21st night of September?”
September It was released in 1978 and achieved resounding success by spreading the enthusiasm that the band’s leader, Maurice White, wanted to convey in the lyrics. The composition, according to the author, is a memory of an intense love, but at the same time nostalgic, who lived one September in his past life. But why precisely September 21?
Maurice White and songwriter Allee Willis replied that the only reason is that it was the number that sounded best to the beat of the song.
“We went through all the dates: ‘Do you remember the first, the second, the third, the fourth…’ and the one that felt and sounded the best was the one on the 21st (…) I constantly have people approaching me and they get very excited by knowing what the meaning was and there is no meaning beyond that it just sounded better than any of the other dates. So, I’m sorry!”, revealed the composer in an interview published by Library of Congress Web.

Although the result of this song was a collaborative work between Maurice White, Allee Willis, and guitarist Al McKay, some of Willis’s changes were significant to the success that was achieved with September. She suggested changes in times, words and the repetition of some of them to highlight the intention of the song. For example, she suggested the chorus with the word “remember ” and changed the story time to a late night to make it more romantic.
