Sony sold 7.8 million PlayStation 5 units through March

Sony’s next generation console, PlayStation 5 (PS5), has managed to sell 7.8 million units from its launch in November of last year until this March 31, as revealed by Sony in its financial results for fiscal year 2020.

The total of Sony’s video game business, which includes both the hardware of its consoles and the ‘software’ of video games and services, recorded revenues of 2,656 trillion yen, approximately 20,198 million euros to changeUp 35 percent from last year and a record for the Japanese company, according to Sony’s fiscal 2020 results, released Wednesday.

PS4 It also continues to grow its sales, establishing itself as Sony’s second-best-selling console behind PS2, with 115.9 million units sold since its launch in 2013, and adding a million more in the first quarter of 2021.

During fiscal year 2020, the number of PS4 and PS5 video game sales, which were 338.9 million (compared to 276.1 million the previous year). Of these, 58.4 million were video games from PlayStation’s own studios.

The majority of video game sales were made in digital format and 65 percent of the games acquired were in this way, an even higher number during the first three months of 2021, in which it reached 79 percent of the total sales of titles for PS4 and PS5.

The video game subscription service Sony’s PlayStation Plus is growing too in number of subscribers, which in March reached 47.6 million, compared to 41.4 the previous year.
