Macaulay Culkin was ready for a leading role
In 1989, John Hughes was leading Uncle Buck to the rescue (Uncle Buck) when he met Macaulay Culkin. Before that film, the little actor had only participated in a couple of television movies and in supporting roles, yet his great performance immediately captured the filmmaker’s attention.
Uncle Buck to the Rescue was a comedy about an irresponsible man who had to take care of his three nephews after his brother suffered a heart attack.
Macaulay Culkin played a boy who managed to confuse a group of adults trying to enter his house with strange questions. The ingenuity that the actor demonstrated and the way he worked, was what convinced Hughes that he was in front of a child ready to star in a movie.
Hughes had found the lead actor of his next film, but he still lacked the ideal plot.
The idea for the film came up on August 8, 1989, before going on a family vacation to Europe. “I was going on a trip and wrote a list of everything I didn’t want to forget. And I thought ‘well, I better not forget my children’. Then it occurred to me what would happen if I left my 10-year-old son at home? What would he do? “, Related the filmmaker.
Following this anecdote, Hughes wrote eight pages of notes, imagining what a child would do alone at home. Two weeks later, back at home, he began to write for the next nine days what would be the first draft of the film, a total of 44 pages script.
‘My poor little angel’ was looking for the ideal director
Hughes contacted Chris Columbus and offered to direct the film. This collaboration became one of the biggest hits of 1990, second only to the romantic films Ghost: The Shadow of Love (1990) and Pretty Woman (1990) at the box office. It also made Macaulay Culkin the biggest youth star of the moment, at just 8 years old.
