The race is on Intel Corp. as the semiconductor giant vows to get back on top of its game, pledging to produce the best chips in the world in four years.
To get there, CEO Pat Gelsinger unveiled a plan Monday for the company to introduce at least one new central processing unit, the brain of the modern computer, every year between 2021 and 2025. Each is expected to build on more transistor technology. advanced than the previous one.
Intel was long the undisputed leader in computing performance. Co-founder Gordon Moore defined the law that underpins the semiconductor industry, outlining how engineers would find ways to shrink circuits at a predictable rate year after year. But the company has lagged behind its Asian rivals after a series of mistakes and delays.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. and Samsung Electronics Co. of South Korea are now ahead of Intel in chip-making technology. They manufacture chips under contract for chip design specialists, allowing those customers to gain an advantage over Intel.
“We are accelerating our innovation roadmap to ensure we are on a clear path to leadership in process performance by 2025,” said Mr. Gelsinger. The CEO rejoined Intel in February with a mandate to revitalize the company after serving as its chief technology officer.
